Workshop

Furniture designed by Mark Asplin Whiteley Limited is constructed in its own 12,000 square foot modern workshop, occupied since 1997.

The building is centrally heated in the hand workshop area and benefits from a thirty foot ceiling enabling large cabinets to be fully assembled prior to installation and allows the craftsmen to work unhindered.

We have 14 highly skilled cabinet makers, a full time workshop director, production coordinator, sander and a spray finisher. Each cabinet maker has his own bench and his own personal set of tools. Jobs are carried from start to finish by individual craftsmen or by a small team led by a master craftsman. This ensures that from selection of materials, to machining, to marquetry cutting, construction and careful preparation of the piece for lacquering, the highest quality is maintained throughout the piece.
Each maker takes enormous pride in producing unsurpassed quality and adding the piece to their own personal portfolio of achievements.

By nature, makers must arrive at Mark Asplin Whiteley Limited with certain attributes of ability, skill and attitude. It takes from 2 to 4 years to move each maker towards the optimum level so he or she is in tune with their work so it becomes second nature.

Our dedication to quality by only making furniture at the highest level and by employing so many makers with talent ensures that there is a cross fertilisation of ideas which spreads quickly within the workshop further ensuring that all work goes out with that obvious but indefinable quality synonymous with Mark Asplin Whiteley’s.

The machinery installed is regularly tested for safety with factory style dust extraction removing waste. Our workshop is one of the cleanest one can find anywhere, this promotes an orderly approach to making. We have a good range of classic woodworking machines duplicated to allow access at all times for each maker to proceed with their work. These are supplemented by other specialist machines to assist with accurate and efficient production where repetition of size of component is key. These include two veneer presses and veneer saws for in house veneering.

We wrap and deliver all our work ourselves using our own vans and experienced drivers, making trips to London at least once a month but usually twice a month or more. Our drivers will ensure that each piece is carefully unwrapped and positioned as requested.
